Coaching

“I do not try to dance better than anyone else. I only try to dance better than myself.”
— Mikhail Baryshnikov

Good coaching is the single most important thing to the successes I’ve had in life. I believe the job of a coach is to understand where you are currently, help you discover where you want to go, be able to see the whole path and how you will get there, and commit to sticking with you the whole way. I believe that when working with coaches in an informal arrangement - sporadically, or for only a short time - a dancer isn't able to communicate the whole picture of who they are and what they need. Nor is a coach able to communicate the fullness of what they have to offer.

This is my coach. I still work with her all the time. There is always more to learn.

More so than in most professions, ballet coaches have the ability to change your life for the better. It's like you're a sailboat sailing along, trying to get across the Atlantic. A good coach will take everything they've learned, all the tips, tricks, know-how and wisdom, and act like a gust of wind at your back. They'll also point out if your course direction is off, they'll help you if the boat starts to take on water, and they'll stick with you all the way til you make it safely to shore.

Finding the right coach was the best stroke of luck I ever had, staying with that coach was the best choice I ever made.

“A mentor is someone who sees more talent and ability within you, than you see in yourself, and helps bring it out of you.”
— Bob Proctor.

Testimonials

"Kealan visited our gymnastics club in the summer of 2017. He spent a week in our gym working hands on with our athletes. It was a great learning experience for our gymnasts and a lot of fun was had by all. Saltos Gymnastics Club would highly recommend working with Kealan to other gymnastics and sporting clubs!"

“Kealan in many ways was a catalyst to my children’s careers as professional dancers. My son first met Kealan as a summer intensive instructor and found inspiration in the passion he holds for dance. Kealan’s mentorship followed him through pre-professional training and into a colleague/friendship today. He currently is a Corps de Ballet member of SF Ballet. My daughter also benefited from Kealan’s mentorship; he was able to offer a male perspective on her movement, partnering, and is always available to answer her many questions. This has continued into her current role with OKC Ballet 2nd company. Kealan has been, and continues to be, a valued presence.”

“It was great working with him on Black Swan. He taught us how to dance well, not only with technique, but with the use of the head, the position of the arm, and the expression! He fully understood each variation and delivered it to us well. He knows a lot about pas de deux and how to get along well with men and women. Our time with him was great!"
