Coaching
“I do not try to dance better than anyone else. I only try to dance better than myself.”
— Mikhail Baryshnikov
Good coaching is the single most important thing to the successes I’ve had in life. I believe the job of a coach is to understand where you are currently, help you discover where you want to go, be able to see the whole path and how you will get there, and commit to sticking with you the whole way. I believe that when working with coaches in an informal arrangement - sporadically, or for only a short time - a dancer isn't able to communicate the whole picture of who they are and what they need. Nor is a coach able to communicate the fullness of what they have to offer.
This is my coach. I still work with her all the time. There is always more to learn.
More so than in most professions, ballet coaches have the ability to change your life for the better. It's like you're a sailboat sailing along, trying to get across the Atlantic. A good coach will take everything they've learned, all the tips, tricks, know-how and wisdom, and act like a gust of wind at your back. They'll also point out if your course direction is off, they'll help you if the boat starts to take on water, and they'll stick with you all the way til you make it safely to shore.
Finding the right coach was the best stroke of luck I ever had, staying with that coach was the best choice I ever made.
“A mentor is someone who sees more talent and ability within you, than you see in yourself, and helps bring it out of you.”
— Bob Proctor.
